The Makeup of the Dominican Republican
In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. He also discovered an island in the Caribbean Sea. The island is Hispaniola. It is made up of two countries; Haiti, of French descent and the Dominican Republic of Spanish descent.
The Dominican Republic started out as Santo Domingo. It was ruled by Haiti for 22 years before getting its independence in 1844.
The Dominican Republic has a population of almost 10 million people. Almost 7 million of those people live in cities, particularly Santo Domingo, the capital city. This is a predominantly Roman Catholic nation with over 95% of the population being catholic.
