How do I take out ram? And is it possible to remove ram from one computer and put it in a different computer?

I want to take my ram out of an old computer and put it in my labtop. I need some suggestions. If that isn’t possible then can I do the same thing with harddrive? Or anything that will make my labtop faster.

It is definitely not possible to move you RAM from a desktop(tower) PC to you laptop(notebook) PC. Nor is it possible to do the same move for the hard drive.

Now, you "may" be able to move RAM from one tower to another, it all depends on how many pins the connector has. There are varying standards, you just need to check the manual for the motherboard.

Laptop memory and hard drives are smaller and desktop components would not fit in a laptop.

this is what RAM inside a desktop looks like:

You can remove it by opening the plastic hinges on each side and then pulling the memory stick up.

These are the RAM standards:

Laptop RAM is SODIMM standard, desktop RAM is DIMM standard and you have to check that the two computers you are swapping RAM between have the same pin numbers for the RAM: either 168 184 or 240

Hope this helps

  1. you can transfer most parts from computer to computer, but not computer to laptop. In your case, the RAM and harddrive will physically be too big, and not have the right connections. Also, if the Ram comes from an old computer it might not help anyway, and run at a slower speed. Adding harddrive space will not speed up your computer, only make it ‘bigger’.

UNPLUG THE COMPUTER…. then if its a laptop unscrew the center most back pannle. the ram will be in there sitting on its side. gently push the ram out and up. when removing the ram be sure not to touch the gold on the bottom.
FYI- 60% of laptops only come with 2 ram slots and there Prob full. if your going to up grade it be sure to by the right kind of ram.

  5. Hey, taking ram out is alot easier then you might think. First you just take off your computers case with a screwdriver(laptop or Tower) then you simply push the 2 tabs at both ends of the ram slot and pull the ram out. Just make sure you pull the ram evenly(meaning don’t just yank one side).

Okay so theres lots of different types of ram, DDR, SDRAM, DDR2 ect ect…. but i wont go into them all. Laptop ram is different then the ram in your computer tower so you can’t interchange them. Hardrives are just a matter of size and interface, so you probably cant interchange them. IF your old computer is a laptop, then yeah you can take out the ram, and hard drive and put it in your new one.

I suggest buying 2×2gb DDR2 667hz Ram and using that in your laptop, its cheap ( about $20-25 each) and will run great.(newegg.com is my favourite site to buy stuff).now before you do that, you might want to make sure you don’t have one. Most laptops will come with 2×1gb ram sticks, and getting 2×2gb can make your computer ALOT faster.

You can tell if its your hard drive slowing you down if you hear that loud buzzing noise alot(thats your hard drive disc spinning) you can speed that up by getting a new one(5400rpm is basic, 7200rpm is faster and Solid State Drive is insanely fast, insanely expensive)

Anyways, im done rambling on. make sure if you want to add a 2nd hard drive that you have 2nd hard drive bay(google your computer to find out) it would help to have all the specs of both computers, but im guessing this is just common stuff you buy at your local bestbuy / computer store. Replacing computer parts is extremely easy and fun, paying anyone to do it for you is crazy in my opinion.

  6. Inorder to take out the RAM from your motherboard you need to open the case and unclip the RAM from the motherboards slots, be very carefull while pullling out the RAM and do not touch the golden pins.

RAM for both desktop (long dimm) and laptop (sodimm) are totally different from one another; so desktop RAM cannot get fitted in laptops and vice-versa. I believe you cannot change any components of Desktop to laptops as all components are compress in case of laptop .

To make your laptop run faster you can upgrade the memory with compatible SODIMM RAM. Before buying RAM make sure to check the compatible through website like http://www.crucial.com, http://www.om-nanotech.com etc.

    Hope this will help you.

  7. yes it is possible but, there are different types of ram modules, 2004 pin, 240 pin and so on, open your PC and take out the RAM make sure that the laptop ram is the same size and preplace it, most computers usually have 2 or more slots for the rame, refer to this youtube video
