The word holistic can be defined as related to holism; Relating to an analysis of the whole instead of a separation into parts. It could be argued all massage therapies are holistic because even the specific massage a sport injury massage therapist, directed at just an injured calf muscle for example, is helping to alleviate the injury and so will remove the psychological stress from the sports person who can then get back to full strength – so still a global whole body benefit. Generally however, holistic massage courses teach massage forms such as Swedish, Reiki, Thai, manual lymphatic drainage, Aromatherapy, and Shiatsu etc, i.e. forms of massage that generally physically work on the body for a general effect.
